Read the two articles below. Come to class prepared to discuss. The focus of our discussion will be the question: What are the limits of Presidential (Executive) Power?

John Yoo: Litigating for Terrorists
Obama’s Leadership in War on Al Qaeda

4/26/12

Come to class tomorrow with your US Constitution. We’ll go over the US Bill of Rights and take a look at the impact of Amendment 14 as well. Also, please be prepared to discuss the article posted below.

Your homework over the weekend will include writing two free-response questions which I’ll hand out in class. Bring those responses in on Monday and we’ll review them together. I also want you to do some research on the school/college you’ve decided to attend in the fall. You should visit the website of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE). Locate your school and come to class prepared to discuss the reasons why Fire rated your school the way it did. (If you haven’t decided, or if the site doesn’t have a rating for your school, just pick any school you considered.)

Finally, we are in the home stretch of our course. Our last classes before exams will be on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, May 3, 4 and 5. You will take a practice AP exam on May 3 and 4 as your final exam. We’ll review the results of the exam on the 5th.
4/25/12

Here’s the article I mentioned in class today. Quiz on the judicial branch tomorrow.

4/12/2012

If you’re really bored — or motivated — there’s another vocab review quiz up on Zoho. As before, I’ll give you a homework credit for attempting it.

Over break, read and outline the chapters on the Judicial Branch (14), Civil Liberties (18) and Civil Rights (19). I’d also like you to come to class with a set of questions for each chapter. We’ll use those to prompt discussion. This link will take you to the publisher’s materials for the three chapters. If you’ve lost it, here’s the link to the “Ethel Wood” materials for exam review. Finally, watch the video “The Road to Brown” which is available on Discovery Streaming (one of the library databases located here.)

4/4/12

Read Chapter 13, The Bureaucracy. This link will take you to the Chapter 13 Learning Objectives and this link will take you to a study outline.

Also, watch this video.

4/2/2012

Obama v Boehner – Who Killed the Debt Deal? NY Times Mar 28, 2012.

4/1/2012

I’ve posted a vocabulary exercise on Zoho to help with your review and preparation for the AP Exam in May. This exercise is for review and will not be counted as a quiz. However, I will give you a 10 point homework credit for attempting it. It is “open” indefinitely. It is a fill-up-the-blanks exercise, but there’s no word bank. A true measure of your recall would be to take it “closed book” without notes, but that’s up to you. I’ll give you the points either way. If you think it’s helpful, I’ll create others for the chapters we’ve covered so far and will continue to put them up.

We will have a formal quiz in class on the Executive Branch on Tuesday or Wednesday depending on how quickly we move through the rest of the material from the chapter.
